Technique 1
False cord screams

In this video, you’ll learn how to do a false cord scream! False cord screaming is a technique where you use the false folds (or vestibular folds) to create distortion, producing a typically rumbly, crackly, and often breathy scream. Taylor will show you how to make an angsty sigh noise and add power to that using your belly muscles, creating a healthy and relaxed false cord scream!

Technique 2
Fry screams

In this video, you’ll learn how to do a fry scream! Fry screaming is a technique where you use your true vocal folds to create distortion, producing a more static and piercing sound. Taylor will show you how to create a basic vocal fry sound, and add air and compression to that, creating a comfortable and balanced traditional fry scream!

Technique 3
Hybrid screams

In this video, you’ll learn how to do a hybrid scream! Hybrid screaming is usually done combining aspects of the above false cord and fry screaming techniques, producing a powerful and full sound. Taylor will show you how to use vocal compression to distort your voice and pushing that into your vocal break, creating an aggressive hybrid scream!

The next steps

With this crash course we are of course only scratching the surface of metal screaming techniques! There are even more ways to source distortion and there are a multitude of auxiliary techniques like mouth shape filtration methods, larynx positioning, true voice blending and more that contribute to the wide array of textures heard in harsh vocals. Everyone's voice is different, nobody learns the same way, and remember to practice in small 10-20 minute doses per day at most if you are a beginner. The number one rule: If it hurts, stop doing it!
